چکیده

Abstract New mapping and dating of volcanic outcrops on the east coast Admiralty Bay, King George Island, has demonstrated that Eocene sequences are dominant also crop out extensively elsewhere, particularly eastern part island. The can be divided into at least three formations (Hennequin, Cape Vauréal Carruthers Cliff) together with strata Warkocz near Lions Rump currently unassigned stratigraphically. recently published 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages indicate all Early in age, mainly Ypresian, extending to Lutetian possibly even Priabonian time more easterly outcrops. Compositional contrasts exist between groups (calc-alkaline vs tholeiitic). composed lavas, many show evidence for contemporary inundation by water. They interbedded sedimentary rocks deposited during flooding events as debris flows, avalanches, hyperconcentrated from traction currents lakes. common presence juvenile detritus suggests sediments were probably linked explosive hydrovolcanic eruptions, some which rooted summit ice caps. Other is permissive, but Island not well established present.

Phylogenetic MLSA and phenotypic analysis identification of three probable novel Pseudomonas species isolated on King George Island, South Shetland, Antarctica.

Antarctica harbors a great diversity of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, microalgae and yeasts. The Pseudomonas genus is one of the most diverse and successful bacterial groups described to date, but only eight species isolated from Antarctica have been characterized. Here, we present three potentially novel species isolated on King George Island. The most abundant isolates from fou...

Regional weather survey on Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica

In 2001 the LIMNOPOLAR Project was launched with the aim of addressing the suitability of freshwater ecosystems as useful sentinels of climate change. In this project, an automatic weather station was deployed on Byers Peninsula (Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands) near several freshwater ecosystems under research. Here the multi-year data recorded are presented and compared with meteoro...

Soil characteristics on varying lithological substrates in the South Shetland Islands, maritime Antarctica

Soils in ice-free areas of Livingston Island have been forming since the last deglaciation in a maritime warmer climate that is more humid than in interior Antarctica. A soil survey was carried out on Byers and Hurd peninsulas to characterize the soils and investigate the processes. Soils were sampled on two different substrates, mudstones and volcanic rocks in Byers Peninsula

Diversity of the lichenized fungi in King George Island, Antarctica, revealed by phylogenetic analysis of partial large subunit rDNA sequences.

Lichens are predominant and important components of flora in the terrestrial ecosystem of Antarctica. However, relatively few researches on the phylogenetic position of Antarctic lichen-forming fungi have been accomplished. In this study, partial sequences of nuclear large subunit rDNAs from 50 Antarctic specimens were obtained and the phylogeny was reconstructed. Antarctic lichen species were ...

Recent Deceleration of the Ice Elevation Change of Ecology Glacier (King George Island, Antarctica)

Glacier change studies in the Antarctic Peninsula region, despite their importance for global sea level rise, are commonly restricted to the investigation of frontal position changes. Here we present a long term (37 years; 1979–2016) study of ice elevation changes of the Ecology Glacier, King George Island (62◦11′S, 58◦29′W). The glacier covers an area of 5.21 km2 and is located close to the H....
